What you get back

  • Real types, not strings everywhere. Numbers come out as numbers and booleans as booleans, so the JSON is usable without a second cleaning pass.
  • Codes stay strings. A value like 00123 keeps its leading zero as a string instead of collapsing to the number 123.
  • Dates in ISO form. Recognised dates are written 2023-03-15, which parses everywhere.
  • Quoted fields survive. Commas, doubled quotes and line breaks inside a quoted CSV field end up correctly escaped inside the JSON string.
  • Separator detected. Comma, semicolon, tab and pipe files are all read; you can override the guess.
  • Headerless files still work. Untick the header box and you get arrays of values instead of objects.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. This page has no server side: the file is read and written back by JavaScript running on your own machine. You can check it by opening the page, disconnecting from the network, and converting a file anyway.

Why not do it by hand

The usual hand-rolled approach — split each line on commas — breaks on the first quoted field containing a comma, and on any field containing a line break. Both are legal CSV and both appear constantly in exported data.
