How your columns are matched

  • Column names are recognised, in four languages. Headers like First name, Prénom, Nombre or Vorname all map to the given name, so an export from any locale works.
  • A full name is built if you only have parts. With separate first and last name columns, the required FN field is composed for you — without it, many clients refuse the file.
  • vCard 3.0 is written. It is the version Outlook, Google Contacts and Apple Contacts all accept; 4.0 is still rejected in places.
  • Special characters are escaped. Commas and semicolons inside a value are escaped, so a company name containing one does not split into two fields on import.
  • Line breaks in notes survive. A multi-line note is written with the escape the format requires rather than breaking the record.
  • CRLF line endings. The specification requires them and some importers reject files without them.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. This page has no server side: the file is read and written back by JavaScript running on your own machine. You can check it by opening the page, disconnecting from the network, and converting a file anyway.

The columns worth having

At minimum, a name column. Beyond that the converter looks for first name, last name, full name, organisation, job title, email, phone, website and notes. Anything else in the file is ignored rather than written as an invalid field.
