What you avoid

  • No XML map to build. Opening XML in Excel means creating or inferring a schema and mapping elements to a sheet. Here the repeating record is detected and you get rows.
  • No "the specified XML source does not refer to a schema". That dialog, and the guessed map behind it, is the usual place this job stalls.
  • Attributes and elements together. Both become columns, attributes prefixed with @, so nothing in the record is lost.
  • A header row ready to filter. Column names come from the element names, in bold, with an autofilter applied.
  • Entities and namespaces handled. Escaped characters are decoded and prefixed tags read under their local name.
  • Large feeds are fine. The parsing is streaming-style, so a long product or transaction feed does not have to be split first.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. This page has no server side: the file is read and written back by JavaScript running on your own machine. You can check it by opening the page, disconnecting from the network, and converting a file anyway.

The equivalent in Excel

Excel’s Developer → Import route needs an XML map; Data → Get Data → From File → From XML loads it into Power Query, where each nested table has to be expanded by hand. Both work and both take longer than a drag and drop.
