What gets stripped and what is kept

  • Styling is dropped. Copying a web table into Excel normally drags in fonts, colours, background images and sometimes the surrounding layout. Here only the cell text arrives.
  • <th> becomes the header row. If the first row uses header cells it is styled as the header and filtered, rather than being data like everything else.
  • Nested markup inside cells is flattened. Links, spans and line breaks inside a cell collapse to the text they contain, with whitespace normalised.
  • Entities are decoded. &nbsp;, &amp; and numeric entities become real characters instead of literal text.
  • Only the outer table is read. A table nested inside a cell of another does not scramble the row structure.
  • Ragged rows line up. Rows with fewer cells are padded rather than shifting the remaining columns.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. This page has no server side: the file is read and written back by JavaScript running on your own machine. You can check it by opening the page, disconnecting from the network, and converting a file anyway.

Why not just copy and paste

Pasting a web table into Excel works, but it brings the page’s formatting with it and often converts codes and dates on the way in. Paste Special → Text avoids the styling but loses the table structure entirely, putting everything into one column.
