What the import wizard costs you

  • No six-step wizard. Excel’s text import asks about delimiters, text qualifiers and column types one screen at a time, and has to be repeated for every file.
  • Codes keep their leading zeros. The wizard defaults every column to General, which turns 00123 into 123 unless you remember to mark that column as text.
  • Long ids are not rounded. A 16-digit reference stays intact instead of being truncated to Excel’s 15 significant digits.
  • Dates are read, not guessed. Recognised dates become real date cells; ambiguous ones stay as text rather than being silently reinterpreted.
  • Encoding is handled. The file is read as UTF-8 and the byte-order mark removed, so accents survive.
  • The result is ready to use. Bold header, autofilter, sensible column widths.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. This page has no server side: the file is read and written back by JavaScript running on your own machine. You can check it by opening the page, disconnecting from the network, and converting a file anyway.

The equivalent in Excel

Data → From Text/CSV gives you the import preview, where you can set a column to Text before loading. That is the right way to do it by hand — it just has to be redone for every file, and the column types are not remembered.
