What a contacts export throws at you

  • Every contact becomes a row. A .vcf export is usually every contact concatenated into one file; each BEGIN:VCARD block becomes its own row.
  • Folded lines are rejoined. The format wraps long values onto continuation lines starting with a space. Read naively, an address comes out cut into pieces.
  • Field types become their own columns. A home phone and a mobile land in TEL (HOME) and TEL (CELL) rather than overwriting each other.
  • Structured names are recomposed. N:Dupont;Jean;;; is written as Dupont, Jean instead of a row of stray semicolons.
  • Escapes are decoded. The \n, \, and \; sequences the format requires become real line breaks, commas and semicolons.
  • Useful fields come first. Name, organisation, email and phone are ordered ahead of the technical ones, so the CSV is readable straight away.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. This page has no server side: the file is read and written back by JavaScript running on your own machine. You can check it by opening the page, disconnecting from the network, and converting a file anyway.

The usual route, and why it fails

Most people rename the .vcf to .csv or open it in a text editor. Because every field sits on its own line, this produces one long single column with FN: and TEL;TYPE=CELL: prefixes still attached, not a table.
